Weekend Question - Are the Characters divided at this stage?

For me at this point in the book (Chapter 6), the characters are ranging from all over the southern part of Britain and the writer wants you to feel like they all have completely different stories, and it seems like this from the surface but if you look at there backgrounds they all link in together, as we are beginning to see with Mrs Holland and Sally/Veronica Lockhart.

In my opinion tha main characters at this stage of the book are still undefined, mainly the only thing we know is that the main character is Sally Lockhart. Other characters i cannot tell, because maybe at the very end of the book play an important roll in it that we (the readers) are completely un aware of. So in my opinion only the main character is presented and as the Title says: "The Ruby in the Smoke", we have only had a brief mention of the ruby, so mainly the mistery has just begun.
